Purpose:
The Tax Specialist is responsible for managing all taxation matters relating to the Life business, including Life Fund taxation, tax compliance, financial reporting, tax risk management, and stakeholder engagement. The role provides technical tax expertise, supports IFRS 17 tax requirements, and ensures accurate and timely tax reporting to Group Tax and other stakeholders.

- Has tax advisory and Life fund taxation experience
- Can manage the tax affairs of policyholder and shareholder funds.
- Provide technical tax guidance on insurance products, investments, restructures, acquisitions, and strategic transactions.
- Assess and advise on the tax treatment of investment income, capital gains, expenses, deductions, and other Life Fund transactions.
- Interpret and apply South African tax legislation relevant to the life insurance industry.
- Competent in Tax compliance and reporting, to ensure compliance with tax legislation and the FirstRand Tax Risk and Compliance Frameworks.
- Review tax reporting packs, reconciliations, and disclosures for financial reporting purposes.
- Support accurate tax reporting to Group Tax and ensure all reporting deadlines are met.
- Investigate and resolve tax-related variances, reconciliations, and stakeholder queries.
- Experienced in financial reporting, governance, risk and have worked closely with Finance and Actuarial teams to ensure alignment between accounting and tax reporting.
- Able to assess the tax implications of financial results and support IFRS 17 tax reporting requirements.
- Can identify, assess, and manage tax risks affecting the Life business.
- Develop and maintain effective tax controls, governance frameworks, and supporting documentation.
- Monitor legislative, regulatory, and industry developments and recommend appropriate actions.
- Support internal and external audits relating to taxation matters.
- Has strong stakeholder engagement skills and act as the primary liaison between the Life business and Group Tax
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Finance, Actuarial, Product, Investment, and Executive stakeholders.
- Support tax-related projects and strategic initiatives.
You will be an ideal candidate if you have
- Minimum Qualification: A relevant bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, Taxation or a related field.
- Registration as a Tax Practitioner will be advantageous
- Experience: 1 – 3 years’ experience in corporate taxation, preferably within Insurance or Financial Services.
- Strong knowledge of South African Income Tax legislation and Life Fund taxation
- Experience in tax accounting, deferred taxation, and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of IFRS and IFRS 17 tax implications.
- Advanced Excel, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Strong technical tax expertise and professional judgement.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and integrity.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.
- Proactive, solutions-driven approach with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
