Tenure-Track, Assistant Professor; Cinematic Arts & Theatre (Theatre)

The University of North Alabama’s Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of theatre beginning in fall 2027. This appointment is a nine-month position with full benefits. The department is particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to a collaborative and active production season. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active record of creative and/or scholarly work while demonstrating excellence in teaching and mentorship. Responsibilities include developing an ongoing agenda of research and/or creative activity appropriate to the field; contributing to student recruitment and retention efforts; attending faculty and departmental meetings; mentoring students within the program; participating in curriculum development and assessment; assisting with the stewardship of departmental equipment and facilities; and fostering a supportive learning environment.

Responsibilities include teaching a 12-credit-hour course load per semester, with the possibility of a 3-credit-hour workload assignment each semester tied to theatrical production; teaching courses in areas such as theatre appreciation, writing for the stage and screen, theatre design and technology, acting, and directing, depending on departmental needs and the candidate’s expertise; mentoring students in their academic, creative, and professional development activities; collaborating with film and theatre faculty on experiential learning opportunities and interdisciplinary projects; supervising departmental productions and projects, which may require flexible and evening hours; maintaining an active agenda of creative and/or scholarly work relevant to the field of theatre; attending faculty and departmental meetings and participating in shared governance; contributing to curriculum development, assessment, and program growth; assisting in the management of departmental equipment and facilities, including supervision of student equipment room workers, and support production management across film and theatre for departmental and student productions; participating in student recruitment, retention, and outreach efforts; supporting departmental events, including the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival, theatre productions, and other special programs; advising students academically and professionally; fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for students from varied backgrounds; and performing additional duties aligned with departmental needs and the candidate’s strengths.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include proficiency in contemporary theatre practices and pedagogy; strong oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of experience; ability to use current instructional and production technologies appropriate to theatre education; ability to mentor student artists in performance, production, and/or design processes; and the ability to collaborate effectively with production staff, including the technical director and staff of Norton Auditorium and the George S. Lindsey Theatre, on departmental productions.

Minimum qualifications include a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in theatre or a related field is required (ABD candidates may be considered provided the degree requirements are met by the start date of the appointment); demonstrated college-level teaching experience in theatre or closely related disciplines is required; and evidence of an active professional and/or creative record in theatre is required.
