Description
About Unreal
Our story began when two kids asked a simple question: Why does everything that tastes so good have to have so much junk?
They set out to prove that unbelievably delicious chocolate snacks could be made with real, simple ingredients and way less sugar. In doing so, they sent a bold message to the whole category: do better.
More than a decade later, that same ambitious spirit still drives Unreal. What started as a simple question has grown into a beloved national brand, raising the bar for snacking in over 35,000 stores including Target, Whole Foods Market, Costco, Sprouts, Kroger, and Publix. We're also sold online through Amazon, Thrive Market, and at unrealsnacks.com.
Job Summary
We are looking for an organized and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our Accounting team and serve as a core anchor for our day-to-day general accounting operations.
The Senior Accountant will play an integral role in ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting and supporting our monthly close cycle. In this position, you will take ownership of foundational general ledger areas—including prepaid expenses, debt, fixed assets, accruals, bi-weekly payroll entries, and monthly budget-versus-actual (BVA) support—while identifying opportunities to build scalable, efficient accounting workflows. You will collaborate closely with team members across Accounting and FP&A, gaining strong visibility into end-to-end consumer packaged goods (CPG) financials through your work with cross-functional partners.
The Senior Accountant will be a vital member of the Unreal Accounting team and report directly to the Accounting Manager.
What You’ll Do
- Perform daily general accounting and manage assigned areas, including prepaid expenses, debt, fixed assets, and accrued expenses.
- Coordinate and execute month-end close schedules, reconciliations, and financial statement roll-forwards in accordance with US GAAP.
- Perform monthly budget-versus-actuals (BVA) analysis and financial reporting deliverables in close coordination with Accounting and FP&A teams.
- Partner with the Accounting Manager to establish best practices focused on reporting accuracy, operational efficiency, and cross-functional alignment.
- Support the Accounting Manager across broader accounting workflows, including trade and revenue accounting.
- Support inventory accounting and COGS workflows in partnership with the Senior Manager, Inventory Accounting.
- Assist with the annual financial audit by preparing clear workpapers and supporting documentation for external auditors.
- Collaborate with business partners across departments to establish smooth accounting processes for new business initiatives.
Who You Are
- Prior professional accounting experience in a general or corporate accounting role (in-house) or within public accounting/audit.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent practical accounting experience); Master’s degree in Accounting, CPA license, or active progress toward a CPA is a plus.
- Strong technical US GAAP accounting knowledge, including revenue recognition, prepaid and accrued expenses, fixed assets, debt, and inventory.
- Proficiency in Excel.
- Highly organized with strong cross-functional collaboration skills, building effective working relationships across departments to gather timely financial inputs and meet month-end close deadlines.
- Self-directed with strong ownership over task execution, detail, and timeline management.
- Strong initiative to drive improvements and automation in systems and accounting/business processes.
- Experience with Budget Variance Analysis (Budgets versus Actuals, or BVAs) preferred.
- Experience in CPG with inventory accounting exposure, or high-growth environments is a plus.
- Experience with an ERP is a plus, experience with NetSuite is highly preferred.
The base compensation range for this position is between $77K - $90K annually. This position is also eligible for a 10% bonus.
