Code Enforcement Officer I

Performs inspections of private and public properties to ensure compliance with municipal ordinances, zoning, and land use regulations governing the maintenance of property, grounds, and structures.

• Conducts visual inspections of properties to identify code violations based on citizen complaints or routine assessments.

• Enters data into the system to generate notices of violation or to document inspection outcomes.

• Responds to citizen inquiries regarding potential code violations and provides information on zoning and city regulations.

• Researches planned districts, nonconforming uses, plat details, and possible illegal uses of property.

• Manages city contracts for lot clearing, including bidding, contract preparation, awarding, and processing contractor payments.

• Investigates and inspects environmental compliance issues in response to public complaints.

• Educates the public and contractors on zoning, code enforcement procedures, and city requirements.

• Inspects junked/abandoned vehicles, derelict structures, and other properties for code compliance.

• Collaborates with internal departments on special projects and performs related duties as assigned.

• Must be able to sit, stand, and drive a City-issued vehicle to work sites.

• Will be exposed to outdoor elements during all seasons while performing on-site inspections.

• Requires physical activities such as lifting, squatting, and climbing.

• May encounter unleashed dogs and hostile property or business owners.

• Strong communication skills to effectively interact with citizens, developers, and internal departments.

• Ability to interpret and apply City ordinances, professional literature, site plans, and zoning regulations.

• Competency in writing clear reports and correspondence.

• Basic mathematical skills.

• Proficiency with office equipment and computer systems.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• Valid Texas driver's license.

• Certification as a Code Enforcement Officer through the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR), and applicants must obtain certification within 18 months of hire.

• Ability to attend required training, which may involve travel.

• Must be able to work some weekends and on-call.

Funding Status:

• This position is federally funded through the Community Development Block Grant and is subject to annual funding approval. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon the availability and yearly approval of federal funding. Funding for this position is not guaranteed beyond the approved funding period.
