Job Description Summary:

The Department of Music at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a 3-year, non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor of Music instructional position that will begin August 10, 2027. This full-time teaching faculty appointment carries a service component commensurate with rank and comes with the possibility of ongoing renewals and a framework for promotion per the Teaching Faculty Framework.

We seek an individual with demonstrated experience teaching one-semester survey courses in western music history, courses in music theory along with accompanying musicianship labs, seminars on music research topics, and topics courses that contribute to the departmental curriculum.  The ability to offer a one-semester survey course in global musics, as well as offerings in popular music, and in the music business is preferred, but not required. 

The successful candidate will have experience in teaching small writing/research intensive seminars, larger lecture courses, and the ability and interest to develop and maintain professional community networks that support student learning and departmental initiatives. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher with prior experience leading classes at the college level and will have a [3-3] teaching load.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree is required at the time the appointment begins (August 10, 2027). 
  • Applicants must have completed 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline in which they will teach. 
  • Ability to teach existing courses in western music history, music theory (including lab sections), musicology, small writing/research intensive seminars, and other lecture and seminar-style courses that contribute to the departmental curriculum.
  • Evidence of successful prior teaching experience in leading classes at the college level.
  • Ability and interest in developing and maintaining professional community networks that support student learning and departmental initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to offer a one-semester survey course in global musics, popular music, and especially music business.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.
  • This position is restricted to a specific term.
