Description
This position is responsible for providing a safe recreational environment for assigned community programs, youth activities and special events provided by the City. This work involves planning, supervising, and instructing community recreational activities and assisting the Recreation Program Supervisor with assigned programs. The position is distinguished from the Recreation Leader I by the level of independence and knowledge acquired through training or work experience.

Adheres to operational guidelines and procedures for daily operations of the recreation programs and facilities.
Assists in planning, organizing and supervising a variety of programs for recreational activities at community centers and other recreational facilities.
Ensures compliance with established policies, procedures and regulatory standards.Creates and guides implementation of capital improvement plans or programs for recreation activities.
Initiates and conducts youth development activities and monitors leisure time activities.
Coordinates the work of volunteers and participates in set up and break down duties for activities as needed.
Supervises assigned programs and ensures the safety and cleanliness of recreational equipment.
Assists in organizing and conducting competitions, displays and other group activities.
Maintains records and assists in the preparation of periodic and special reports.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Recreation and Parks ordinance, rules, regulations, policies, procedures and practices established by the City.
Knowledge of hazards and safety regulations, precautions for recreational programs and activities.
Knowledge of methods and techniques in planning, organizing and leading recreation programs and activities for all age groups.
Knowledge of First Aid and CPR applications.
Ability to create and guide implementation of capital improvement plans or programs for recreation activities.
Ability to prioritize and work collaboratively with assigned staff.
Ability to promote customer service focus in forging cooperative public relations.
Ability to use initiative and exercise sound independent judgment.
Ability to operate modern office equipment
Ability to lift, push, pull and carry equipment up to 50 pounds with assistance.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and activity participants.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited high school or hold an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED), with some college level course work in Recreation Administration; and two (2) years of related experience leading youth recreational programs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities of the position.
This position is designated as Safety Sensitive due to the tasks or duties that the employer reasonably believes could affect the safety and health of the employee performing the task, other individuals, and/or may lead to damage to property. This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing to include pre-employment testing.
Special Qualifications:
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Consent to chemical substance screening consistent with mandated Federal, State, and City guidelines and programs, to include random tests for the detection of drug or alcohol use.
Physical/Mental Demands:
The role demands a level of physical fitness and activity to effectively oversee and participate in sports activities. This includes the ability to stand, walk, and move around for extended periods, often in outdoor environments and on various terrains. The position may require lifting and carrying equipment or supplies, such as sports gear, cones, or signage, which can range in weight. Additionally, the Team Leader may need to demonstrate and participate in sports activities to instruct and guide participants, requiring agility, coordination, and stamina. The role may also involve occasional physical exertion to ensure the safety and supervision of participants during sports events, practices, or games. Ability to effectively receive detailed information through oral communication and distinguish between different sounds Overall, the physical demands of the Recreation Sports Team Leader position entail an active and dynamic presence to effectively lead and engage participants in sports and recreational activities.
Must be able to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds. Must be able to bend or crouch to interact with children on their level. Must be able to stand for extended periods.
The work is sedentary and generally the employee may be required to speak, walk, stand, bend, and/or carry light items to include paper, books or files.
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
Balancing ability: sufficient to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
Feeling ability: sufficient to perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Dexterity ability to pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
Handling ability: sufficient to pick, hold, or otherwise work, primarily with the whole hand.
Hearing ability: sufficient to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to distinguish between different sounds.
Kneeling ability: sufficient to bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
Lifting ability: sufficient to raise objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
Mental Acuity: sufficient to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
Reaching ability: sufficient to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
Speaking ability: sufficient to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
Visual ability: sufficient to observe recreation activities, to effectively operate standard office equipment; ability to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.
Walking ability: sufficient to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or move from one work site to another.
Work Environment:
The work environment entails minimal discomforts that may be associated with an office environment.
Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires the need to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
